Should you settle when you suffer a brain injury?

3/25/2016

Brain injuries are some of the most serious consequences that can result from an accident. Whether you’re in a car accident or get hurt at work, hitting your head can cause immediate and severe consequences.

After you suffer an injury, it’s important to get the immediate medical care you need. Then, you or a representative should reach out to begin making a claim for compensation. If someone else’s negligence resulted in your injury, then a personal injury claim may be right for you. If you were hurt at work, then workers’ compensation may kick in.

There are many factors to consider when you want to make a claim. First of all, don’t just accept a settlement because it’s offered. It’s important to consider how much this injury could cost you not only now but also in the future. The costs aren’t just medical bills; you have lost wages, pain and suffering, and other factors that also play a role in how much you should be able to recover.

In the future, you may suffer ongoing symptoms or need ongoing care for some time. This should be accounted for. For instance, you may need therapies to help you walk to talk again; you may need anti-seizure medications or expensive tests to make sure your brain has started to heal correctly. Dizziness and confusion, amnesia and other concerns may also plague you.

It’s wise not to make a decision about a settlement until after you know the full cost of this injury. Once you do, you can go into your case with the facts.
